The Coshocton Collaborative stands as a testament to the power of vision and partnership, bringing together +Detail, SoL Harris/Day Architecture firm, and the Coshocton Port Authority to breathe new life into a historic 100-year-old building. This ambitious endeavor aimed to create a vibrant hub for business incubation and creativity, marking a significant milestone in the city's ongoing rejuvenation.
Crafting a Nexus for Growth and Innovation
The Coshocton Collaborative was conceived as a multifaceted space to support the burgeoning needs of the city's entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators. With a thoughtful blend of collaborative and private workspaces spread across its 20,000 sq ft area, the project serves as a cornerstone for individuals to work, create, and thrive. From coworking lounges and a café to artist studios and maker spaces in the basement, the design harmoniously integrates modern functionality with the building's historical essence.
Design Philosophy: Merging Past with Present
+Detail's scope encompassed a comprehensive suite of interior services, including finishes, furniture planning, lighting selection, millwork, and interior signage. The challenge was not just to renovate but to reimagine the space, preserving its historical charm while infusing it with contemporary design elements. This delicate balance was achieved through meticulous research and an in-depth understanding of the building's existing conditions and architectural nuances.
The initial stages involved a thorough analysis of the space's unique characteristics, such as the charming 100-year-old penny tile and the prevailing arch motif. These elements became the cornerstone of the design, ensuring that the new interiors felt both innovative and respectful of the building's heritage. Collaborating closely with SoL Harris/Day and the Coshocton Port Authority, +Detail crafted spaces that were not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and flexible, catering to the diverse needs of its users.
Overcoming Challenges with Creative Solutions
One of the project's key challenges was integrating modern infrastructure without compromising the historical integrity of the space. This was exemplified in the inventive concealment of mechanical ductwork in the café, and the strategic use of paint and preservation techniques to enhance the original woodwork.
